100-Year-Old Man Skydives for Birthday

Palm Desert resident Vernon Maynard celebrated his 100th birthday on Nov. 4, 2013 by taking his first skydive. Maynard and his great nephews, Kyle and Andrew Wilhelms from Santa Cruz, made the jump, 13,000-feet above the earth at Skydive Perris in Perris Valley, Calif. Maynard was born on Nov. 4, 1913 in Nebraska. A longtime L.A. resident currently living in Palm Desert, he previously worked for Northrup North American on the B-25 bomber and the "Flying Wing" -- the prototype to the Stealth Bomber. He is also the last surviving owner of the Great White Steamship, which brought travelers from Long Beach to Catalina Island in the 1960s. As a result, he was inducted into the Catalina Museum in 2011.
