Bloody Chicago: 7 killed, 36 others shot over weekend In a particularly bloody weekend even by Chicago standards, seven people were killed and three dozen more were wounded by gun violence between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. DNAinfo Chicago reports the most recent fatal shooting occurred around 2:30 am on Sunday when police officers from the Marquette District shot and killed an armed man in South Lawndale. According to police, officers were attempting to conduct a traffic stop in the 1700 block of South Springfield Avenue when a passenger in the car fled on foot into an alley. The suspect then allegedly pulled out a gun, prompting officers to shoot him dead. The slain suspect was described as in his 20s. NBC Chicago reports that five people were shot, one of them fatally, in two separate shootings in Little Village. The dead man has been identified as 21-year-old Ricardo Herrera, who was killed at around 10:50 pm Saturday. Also in the 10:00 hour, 24-year-old McGregory Porter of the 5900 block of Iowa Street was walking with another man in the 5500 block of West Quincy Street when a group of men approached them and began shooting. Porter was struck in the eye and pronounced dead around 11:00 pm. Less than an hour later, 16-year-old Kevin Rivera of the 1500 block of N. Keystone Avenue was shot by a bicycle-riding gunman in the 4100 block of N. West Avenue. The injured boy attempted to flee but collapsed shortly after being shot. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center at 1:37 am on Sunday. Rivera's death has been ruled a homicide, but no suspect has been identified or caught. Shortly after midnight, gunfire erupted in a nightclub in Chatham, killing Tom Wood, 40, and injuring three others. One victim remains hospitalized in critical condition; no suspects have been found. About an hour later, police responded to a call reporting shots fired in the 7400 block of South Parnell Avenue. Upon arriving, the found 19-year-old Jamal Jones bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds. Jones, of the 8800 block of South Yale Avenue, was later pronounced dead at Christ Hospital. Just minutes later, Cortez Wilberton was walking with a female companion on South Keeler Avenue on the West Side when the two were shot. Wilberton, of the 200 block of South Lavergne Avenue, was later pronounced dead at Loretto Hospital. The woman, who was grazed in the face, is hospitalized in stable condition.
