Fatal Hit and Run Accident- Sagamore Bridge- Bourne MA (07-04-13)

BOURNE -- Police are investigating a two-vehicle head-on crash and possible hit and run on the Sagamore Bridge tonight that left one dead, ejected another, injured five others and closed the bridge to traffic to and from the Cape, according to the state police. The accident, which occurred at 8:02 p.m. in the westbound lane of Route 3 at the Scusset Beach Road exit, involved at least two vehicles, according to a spokesperson with the Massachusetts State Police in Bourne. The driver of a minivan died, while the driver and lone occupant of a pickup truck was ejected and was taken to South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth with life-threatening injuries. There were five others in the minivan who were also taken to area hospitals, including two with life-threatening injuries, one of whom is a child. Following the crash, police issued an alert to law enforcement to be on the lookout for a dark-colored pickup truck with heavy front-end damage headed toward Cape Cod. The driver allegedly caused the accident before fleeing the scene, according to the state police. Traffic from the Scenic Highway and the Cape was being diverted to the Bourne Bridge. At 10:04 p.m., the Sagamore Bridge was completely shutdown in both directions as firefighters extracted a body from the silver minivan, which has Massachusetts plates. The minivan was facing west in the westbound lane, pushed onto the sidewalk and up against the guardrail. No rescue vehicles were on the scene at that time. Nearby at the accident scene, the green pickup truck with New Jersey plates was facing east in the westbound lane. Its front end was caved in all the way to its wheels. A couple of flatbed trucks and about four state police cruisers and unmarked vehicles were at the scene as a state police team reconstructed the accident. The bridge was dry with no fog, but slightly overcast, at the time of the crash. capecodonline.com
