Speaking in tongues – officially known as Glossolalia – is a practice mentioned in the Bible dating back to Jesus’ first disciples, who first began speaking in tongues at Pentecost.
Outside of Christianity (and even within it) many people who have heard of the practice simply consider it nonsense.
On the other hand, those who regularly speak in tongues when they pray describe it the purest form of prayer.
What’s the science behind the Christian practice speaking in tongues?
A University of Pennsylvania study conducted by Dr. Andrew Newbery examined people who speak in tongues with MRI. The study proved that the speech center of their brains was not a work when the people spoke in tongues.
The finding is consistent with their claims based on Biblical teaching that it is not them speaking, but the Holy Spirit of God speaking through them.
